Founded in 1968 by Doug Tompkins and "Hap" Klopp, The North Face was so named because the north face of any mountain in the northern hemisphere is typically the most difficult to climb and they felt such a name reflected their commitment to gear and clothing excellence. Doug went on to found the Esprit clothing company, while Hap continued to build The North Face into a leading outdoor brand with worldwide distribution. Today The North Face is owned by VF Corporation, one of the largest clothing companies in the world. With this huge resource behind them The North Face has been able to continue innovating and growing beyond expectations. From gear and clothing for 7000m ascents to stylish and warm down parkas for urban living, The North Face devotion to excellence lives on.
