Baselayer

We highly recommend Ibex Woolies base layers ($85). This ultra-fine, machine washable and non-itch Merino wool is the finest wool used in base layer construction. A critical factor in staying warm and comfortable is keeping the skin dry - wool wicks moisture from the skin. In fact, Woolies can absorb up to 30% of their weight in moisture and still feel dry to the touch. Wool is naturally anti-microbial and is not quick to pick up odour - which is quite a blessing if you have to share a tent with three other people for an extended weekend in the middle of February. Ibex spends quite a bit of time with body mapping designs, for a fit unlike any other. Only Ibex guarantees the diameter of their 17.5 micron merino wool garments which translates into lightweight comfort for our customers.

Threads Tips

Hypothermia

This is a serious condition where the body looses too much heat and begins to shut itself down to preserve life. The key point is the torso and head (where the vital organs reside) need to be within a couple of degrees of 37C. It can happen in extreme cold or even cool summer nights. Being wet (from rain or sweat) can speed the process dramatically as the body loses heat 24X faster when wet than just through the air alone. Dressing in layers, using hats and gloves and staying dry in is the key in minimizing the chances of becoming hypothermic.

Symptoms include: denial that anything is wrong, poor judgment, combative nature, disorientation, extreme fatigue, profuse sweating, shaking or chills.
Treatment typically includes getting the victim to a warm environment and gentle warming. If camping, it may mean crawling into a sleeping bag with the victim to give them your body heat.
